The Forensic & Investigative Sciences program surveys each student that graduated with a FIVS degree every year to track the employment and continuing education of the graduates. Forty-seven percent knowledge rate* was realized from this survey. Students were asked their employment or graduate studies status, and if they were employed or studying “in field” (i.e. within the forensics sciences) or “outside of field” (i.e. in an area not associated with the forensic sciences).
Highlights
- A total of 88 students responded to this survey
- 68% of respondents are currently employed
- 62% of employed students are working in forensics or an associated** field
- 36% are employed outside of the forensics field.
- 1% of respondents are currently unemployed
- 31% of students are in graduate school, law school, medical school, or other professional continuing education
- 69% of these students are studying forensics or an associated field
- 31% are studying outside of the forensics field

*The term “knowledge rate” define the percent of graduates for which the department has reasonable and verifiable information concerning post-graduation career activities. This information comes directly from the graduate via survey. The department makes good faith efforts to verify the information. The goal is the highest possible rate, but the department strives for a minimum knowledge rate of 65%. Statistics are updated as students respond.
**“Associated fields” refers to areas involved in the investigation and prosecution of crimes. Examples include police officers, medical examiners, prosecuting attorneys, defense attorneys, probation officers, expert witnesses, general crime scene analysts, etc.
